Catching up with Aasiyah Abdulsalam X Founder of the wig fix

Hey Guys, I am back again with another amazing interview with another amazing entrepreneur Aasiyah Abdulsalam (Founder & Creator of THE WIG FIX). I met her few years ago at a beauty & hair event in the U.K. and I am indeed proud of how she is growing her amazing brand.

What inspired you to take the path of entrepreneurship? Everybody has a story, what is your story?

I wrote my dissertation about the wig industry. This was during the peak of the initial DTC era and I was waiting for the wave of innovation to hit the wig industry. Years later I was still waiting so decided to tackle it myself!

What advice will you give your younger self?

Sometimes people’s harsh critique is just a reflection of their internalised self judgement. Don’t let that impact your morale or your decisions.

Relationship building – Let’s talk about this! How important is relationship building for you and how did it help your business?

It is paramount. We treat every interaction whether it’s a Twitter DM or TikTok comment as the initial first step of a relationship with the brand. Particularly in our industry it’s so important to meet customers where they are at and treat them with the utmost respect. The wig industry is notoriously known for being opaque and confusing so building a brand based on trust has and will ensure our longevity.

Do you take risks? What risk did you take? Was it a good or bad risk? What would you do differently?

All the time! Starting a business at that point of my career was a risky move because those early years out of formal education were some of the most critical years for compounding growth career wise.  Judging by where we’re currently at with the business I’m thrilled with my decision.

I would’ve been more headstrong starting out, a lot of doubt and opinions affected my confidence when first starting.

What do you do for personal growth & development?

Stay curious, I subscribe to numerous newsletters and I’m frequently listening to podcast interviews of founders that I find inspiring.

Was there a time you felt like giving up? What inspired you to keep going?

Never. Even in the worst times I’ve always been aware of the unique opportunity that I created for myself and don’t take it for granted.

How do you self care?

I swim and go to yoga classes multiple times a week. I binge on YouTube, I feel like I’m always passively learning on that platform.

What advice would you give to anyone who is about to embark on the entrepreneurship journey?

Have a clear financial plan and multiple forecasts.

What is one of your greatest accomplishments in business? How did you get there?

The product was voted as one of the best products of 2020 by VOGUE. An editor that wears wigs uses The Wig Fix frequently and felt like she had to feature it!

Also receiving a utility patent for The Wig Fix. It’s an incredible feeling to conceptualise something, bring it to life and have it historically noted as your invention.

Are you open to mentorship? How can you be reached? What are your social handles?

Sure, I can be reached by email [email protected].
